Major League Baseball announced today that the city of Cleveland will host the 2019 All-Star game. This adds on to a list of events hosted in the city in an attempt to bring Cleveland back to the top of the American markets. Some of the most recent events include the NBA Finals, the World Series, and the Republican National Convention.
The game will be played at the home of the Cleveland Indians, Progressive Field. The last time the club hosted the annual mid-summer classic was in 1997. In that game, the American League team beat the National League team by a score of 3-1. Joe Torre of the New York Yankees managed the American League club and Bobby Cox of the Atlanta Braves did the same for the National League.
The game featured many Hall of Fame players on both sides. The National League had catcher Mike Piazza, first baseman Jeff Bagwell, second baseman Craig Biggio, and designated hitter Tony Gwynn. Hall of Fame hopefuls Barry Bonds and Curt Schilling were also named to the roster for the game. The American League roster included catcher Ivan Rodriguez, outfielder Ken Griffey Jr., and third baseman Cal Ripken Jr. Alex Rodriguez and the game’s MVP, Sandy Alomar Jr., were on the American League roster as well.
The Indians had a great 1997 season that ended in heartbreak when they lost to the Florida Marlins in the World Series. After yet another sad ending in 2016, it looks as if the Indians are finally ready to win a World Series championship. The core of their roster is returning, and they made a big move by adding third baseman Edwin Encarnacion in free agency this offseason.
These are exciting times for the city of Cleveland and the Indians organization. With a winning club and more events in the city, they are finding ways to make national headlines.
