Giants, Melancon Reach Contract Agreement

The San Francisco Giants and closer Mark Melancon have agreed to a contract pending Melancon’s physical.

This past season, Melancon, 31, had a 2-2 record with 47 saves in 51 save opportunities with the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Washington Nationals. He had a 1.64 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP with 65 strikeouts.

Over his entire 8-year MLB career, which he has spent with the New York Yankees, the Houston Astros, the Boston Red Sox, the Pirates, and the Nationals, Melancon has a 21-18 record with 168 saves in 191 save opportunities. He has a 2.60 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP with 407 strikeouts.

Melancon’s career bests over his 8-year MLB career are 8 wins (2011 with the Astros), 51 saves (2015 with the Pirates), a 1.39 ERA (2013 with the Pirates), a 0.87 WHIP (2014 with the Pirates), and 71 strikeouts (2014 with the Pirates).
