The Case for Bumgarner in the HR Derby

With 11 home runs in the past 2 seasons plus this one (175 at-bats), San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner actually has a solid argument of being in this year’s MLB Home Run Derby.  To compare Bumgarner’s hitting with others’ hitting, in 173 at-bats this season 2015 National League Most Valuable Player Bryce Harper has hit 13 home runs, and fellow star Giancarlo Stanton has hit 12 home runs in 173 at-bats.

Bumgarner himself stated that participating in the Home Run Derby would not put him at any injury risk.  Plus, the Homerun Derby is a fun contest that is meant to entertain, with no effect on standings whatsoever.  Since Bumgarner’s hitting gives him a good reason to be in it, and he wants to participate, I say, why not?  Fans would love to see a great hitting pitcher in the Derby, and he has the potential to give many star players a run for their money.
