Mondesi Suspended 50 Games

Kansas City Royals prospect infielder Raul Mondesi has received a 50-game suspension due to a performance-enhancing substance, Clenbuterol, found in his over-the-counter cold medicine.  The interesting part about this case, however, is that it is the first time an MLB player has received a reduced punishment due to an unintended misuse of a substance.  While the typical suspension for using this substance would be 80 games, Mondesi only will be out 50 games, and will be eligible for the playoffs.

“I did not know it contained a banned substance,” Mondesi told reporters.  “I tested positive for that banned substance, with a minuscule amount of Clenbuterol in my system, which could not have possibly enhanced my performance on the field, and now must face the consequences of that mistake.”
